I Don’t Care About Your Character’s Breakfast (unless it’s poisoned, of course)

I’ve seen a tendency in new authors to begin at the beginning — like, the very beginning. No matter what Julie Andrews says, it’s not a very good place to start.

If your character is alive (or even undead), I assume they woke up. Whether it was dusk, dawn, or any other time – it’s just boring. They stretch, put on their socks, make coffee, scratch the cat, their armpits, whatever… Oy. No. That will not grab a reader.

If you need to write it to get your bearings in the first scene, fine. Delete, delete, delete before you send it out into the world.

And, this trope of waking up with amnesia in an alley that’s done in YA fiction over and over again… don’t. Give us something new!

Unless someone is standing over them with a gun or there’s a dead hooker in the bed, don’t do it.
